en On the peninsula, formed by this branch close to the sea, stands the city of Argostoli, the capital of the island. It stretches nearly two miles along the sea-shore, presenting an irregular line of habitations, consisting generally of two stories in height, quadratic in form, and prettily painted outside. About a mile from the town,to the N.W. stands the lazzaretto.

Παρότι ένα Ζακυνθινός έμπορος του είχε δώσει συστατικές επιστολές για πολλές οικογένειες της Κεφαλονιάς οι περισσότερο τον συναντούν σε υπαίθρια καφενεία. Κανείς δεν τον φιλοξενεί. Στο Αργοστόλι συναντάται με πολλούς εμπόρους και αριστοκράτες. Ο Κόμης Α____ του προσφέρει δείπνο, όπου τα εδέσματα παρουσιάζονται με τον "αγγλικό/γαλλικό" τρόπο. Διαβάζουμε ότι η πόλη σφύζει από εμπορική δραστηριότητα, ενώ μεταξύ των πλουσιοτέρων εμπόρων βρίσκεται και ο Βρετανός Brants.

Kendrick remains in Argostoli for a long time. He finds the inhabitants more likeable than those of Zakynthos, but equally inhospitable. Although a Zakynthian merchant had given him letters of recommendation for many families in Kefalonia, most meet him in open-air cafes. Nobody is hosting him. In Argostoli he meets many merchants and aristocrats. Count A ____ offers him dinner, where the dishes are presented in the "English / French" way. We read that the city is bustling with commercial activity, while among the richest merchants is the British Brants.

en Argostoli (Greek: Αργοστόλι, Katharevousa: Ἀργοστόλιον) is a town and a former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Kefalonia, of which it is a municipal unit. It has been the capital and administrative centre of Kefalonia since 1757, following a population shift down from the old capital of Agios Georgios (also known as Kastro) to take advantage of the trading opportunities provided by the sheltered bay upon which Argostoli sits. Argostoli developed into one of the busiest ports in Greece, leading to prosperity and growth. The municipal unit has an area of 157.670 km2.[3] The 2011 census recorded a population of 10,633 in the Argostoli municipal unit. Its largest towns are Argostóli (pop. 9,748), Razata (507), Dilináta (496) and Kompothekráta (449).
