Quelques affaires de service exigeant que je m e rendisse auprès du bey de Serrès, je pris la grande route qui conduit dans la Thrace, avec l'intention de m'arrêter sur les ruines d'Amphipolis, avant de me détourner de cette route, pour arriver à Serrès.

Τα Βυζαντινά τείχη της Θεσσαλονίκης έχουν σήμερα μήκος περίπου 4 χιλιομέτρων, αλλά η αρχική περίμετρος που κάλυπταν ήταν 8 χιλιόμετρα και το ύψος τους ήταν 10-12 μέτρα[1]. Το τείχος για πολλούς αιώνες περιέβαλλε την πόλη, περιλαμβάνοντας στη νοτιοδυτική πλευρά προς το Θερμαϊκό κόλπο παραθαλάσσια τείχη, τα οποία όμως σήμερα δεν υπάρχουν. Στη βορειοανατολική πλευρά ανεβαίνει προς τα υψώματα, περιλαμβάνοντας ακρόπολη, μέσα στην οποία βρίσκεται και το αμυντικό σύμπλεγμα του Επταπυργίου.

The Byzantine walls of Thessaloniki today are about 4 km long, but the original perimeter they covered was 8 km and their height was 10-12 meters [1]. The wall surrounded the city for many centuries, including on the southwest side towards the Thermaic Gulf coastal walls, which do not exist today. On the northeast side it ascends to the hills, including the citadel, inside which is the defensive complex of Eptapyrgio.
