Η πόλη Καλαμύδη, κατά την αρχαιότητα, βρισκόταν λίγο πιο βόρεια από την σημερινή Παλιόχωρα(Παλαιοχώρα) Χανίων. Για την πόλη Καλαμύδη δεν υπάρχουν επαρκείς πληροφορίες, παρά μόνο, ότι εικάζεται, πως ήταν επίνειο (λιμάνι) της Αρχαίας Καντάνου και άκμασε στα δωρικά και ρωμαϊκά χρόνια μαζί με τις γειτονικές πόλεις Σύια (Σούγια), Λισό, Ποικιλασσό και Τάρα (Αγία Ρουμέλη). Όταν επισκέφτηκε την περιοχή ο Άγγλος περιηγητής Robert Pashley, το 1834, δεν βρήκε τίποτα άλλο εδώ παρά μόνο ερείπια.

The city of Kalamydi, in Antiquity, used to be a little further to the north from current Paliochora (Palaiochora) of Hania. There are not enough information on Kalamydi, other than what is believed about it, regarding it being a sea harbor (harbor) of ancient Kantanos and thrived during Doric and Roman times together with the nearby cities Syia (Sougia), Lissos, Poikilassos and Tarrha (Agia Roumeli). When the English wanderer, Robert Pashley, visited the area in 1834, he found only ruins there.
