Μάλιστα αποτελεί την έδρα του Δήμου Τεμένους. Η θέση του χωριού είναι στους βορειοδυτικούς πρόποδες του υψώματος Ρόκκα, περί τα 18 χιλιόμετρα από την πόλη του Ηρακλείου. Τα σημαντικότερα προϊόντα που παράγονται είναι σταφύλια, σταφίδες, λάδι και κρασί.Ανάμεσα στα άλλα έχει ΚΕΠ, Αστυνομία, Γυμνάσιο και Δημοτικό σχολείο, ιατρείο και υδρεύεται από την πηγή Μεγάλη Φουντάνα. Στον οικισμό βρίσκονται οι εκκλησίες του Προφήτη Ηλία και του Ευαγγελισμού (δίκλιτη), του Μιχαήλ Αρχαγγέλου, καθώς επίσης και πολλά εξωκλήσια, μερικά από τα οποία χρονολογούνται από τα βυζαντινά χρόνια. Ως το 1955 είχε την ονομασία Κανλί Καστέλι.

en Profitis Ilias is a large settlement with 1,471 inhabitants in 2001 and the homonymous Municipal Department of the province of Temenos in the Municipality of Temenos in the Prefecture of Heraklion.
