A somewhat tedious descent brought us to the village of Tylisso, where although I heard of neither coins nor other antiquities, yet I felt little or no doubt that I was standing on the site of the ancient Tylissos.

Η Τύλισ(σ)ος είναι μεγάλος οικισμός και ομώνυμο Δημοτικό διαμέρισμα του Δήμου Τυλίσου του νομού Ηρακλείου στην επαρχία Μαλεβιζίου. Μάλιστα αποτελεί και την έδρα του Δήμου αυτού. Η θέση του είναι στις ανατολικές υπώρειες του Ψηλορείτη, μέσα σε μικρή πεδιάδα, που είναι κατάφυτη από αμπέλια και ελαιώνες. Κατά την απογραφή του 2001 βρέθηκε να έχει 1.085 κατοίκους, που ασχολούνται κυρίως με την ελαιοκαλλιέργεια και την αμπελοκαλλιέργεια. Παράγονται λάδι , κρασί, σταφίδα, εσπεριδοειδή. Υδρεύεται από τις πηγές Λούτρα και Αγίου Μάμα. Στην Τύλισο βρίσκονται οι εκκλησίες του Αγίου Νικολάου, ο οποίος είναι και πολιούχος, του Αγίου Ιωάννη του Προδρόμου, του Αγίου Αντωνίου, της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου με ίχνη τοιχογραφιών και της Μεταμόρφωσης του Σωτήρος. Εξάλλου, υπάρχουν και τα εξωκλήσια, όπως του Αγίου Μάμα, της Παναγίας Κεράς, της Παναγίας της Λούτρας, του Αγίου Αντωνίου και του Αγίου Γεωργίου.

Tylis (s) is a large settlement and homonymous Municipal Department of the Municipality of Tylissos in the prefecture of Heraklion in the province of Malevizi. In fact, it is the seat of this Municipality. Its location is in the eastern foothills of Psiloritis, in a small plain, which is overgrown with vineyards and olive groves. According to the 2001 census it was found to have 1,085 inhabitants, who are mainly engaged in olive growing and viticulture. Oil, wine, raisins, citrus fruits are produced. It is watered by the springs Loutra and Agios Mama. In Tylissos are the churches of Agios Nikolaos, who is also the patron saint, of Agios Ioannis the Forerunner, of Agios Antonios, of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with traces of frescoes and of the Transfiguration of the Savior. Besides, there are also the chapels, such as Agios Mama, Panagia Kera, Panagia Loutra, Agios Antonios and Agios Georgios.
