Before arriving at Pólis we find considerable remains of a massive brick edifice, at one end of which are some buttresses each fifteen feet wide and projecting about nine feet. Close by are remains of an odd circular building, about 60 feet across in its interior. Each of the
recesses, shewn in the sketch at the head of this chapter, is rather more than a semicircle, with a diameter of about eleven feet. The whole is built of moderate sized stones. About 300 paces to the south-south-west of Pélis is an ancient cistern 76 feet long and nearly 20 feet wide. A rapid descent on the western side of the village conducts to considerable remains of a Roman brick building, beyond which, in the deep valley between Pólis and the mountain Phteroláko, runs the stream which divides the eparkhía of Apokórona from that of Rhithymnos.

Η σημερινή Αργυρούπολη, απλώς Πόλις κατά το 19ο αιώα ταυτίζεται σήμερα με την αρχαία Λάππα, αρχία ελληνική και ρωμαϊκή πόλη, και αυτός είναι ο βασικός λόγος που την επισκέπτεται ο συγγραφέας. Βρίσκει στο χώρο διάσπαρτες αρχαιότητες, ενώ επισκέπται και το Ναό των Πέντε Παρθένων

Today's Argyroupoli, simply a city in the 19th century, is today identified with the ancient Lappa, an ancient Greek and Roman city, and this is the main reason why the author visits it. He finds scattered antiquities in the area, while he also visits the Temple of the Five Virgins

Η Αργυρούπολη είναι σήμερα τοπική κοινότητα του δήμου Ρεθύμνης της περιφέρειας Κρήτης (πρόγραμμα Καλλικράτης). Από το 1999 έως το 2010 σύμφωνα με την τότε διοικητική διαίρεση της Ελλάδας ήταν έδρα του ομώνυμου δημοτικού διαμερίσματος του Δήμου Λαππαίων. Σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2001 ο πληθυσμός του ανέρχεται στους 402 κατοίκους, ενώ βρίσκεται σε υψόμετρο περίπου 260 μέτρων. Έχει χαρακτηριστεί παραδοσιακός οικισμός μέσης πολιτιστικής αξίας (κατηγορία ΙΙ) (ΦΕΚΔ 728/1995). Το έτος 2008 έλαβε βραβείο "καθαρότερου οργανωμένου παραδοσιακού οικισμού" από τη Νομαρχιακή Επιτροπή Τουριστικής Προβολής Ρεθύμνης.

Argyroupoli is today a local community of the municipality of Rethymno in the region of Crete (Kallikratis program). From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the homonymous municipal district of the Municipality of Lappaea. According to the 2001 census, its population amounts to 402 inhabitants, while it is located at an altitude of about 260 meters. It has been characterized as a traditional settlement of medium cultural value (category II) (Government Gazette 728/1995). In 2008 he received the award for "cleaner organized traditional settlement" from the Prefectural Committee for Tourism Promotion of Rethymno.
