There is a small lake near this place, at the foot of the hills: it is called Lake Kurná”. The name is derived from a village, consisting of about eighty Christian and five Mohammedan families, situated on the hill above it. The people told me that there are no fish in the lake.
Buondelmonti's account, after passing, when at sea, the mouths of the rivers in the plain of Apokérona, is that they saw a rocky coast, and, at no great distance, a river, which his description identifies with this of Armyró. According to his information the little lake Kurnă was full of fine eels.

Η λίμνη Κουρνά είναι η μοναδική φυσική λίμνη γλυκού νερού της Κρήτης. Αναφέρεται στην αρχαιότητα από τον Στέφανο τον Βυζάντιο με την ονομασία Κορήσια και φέρεται στην περιοχή να υπήρχε αρχαίος ναός που αποδιδόταν στην Κορήσια Αθηνά και φαίνεται να ήταν αφιερωμένος στον Ίππο ή και στην Κόρη. Φέρεται ότι αυτά τα ονόματα έδωσαν το παλαιότερο τοπωνύμιο Ιπποκορώνα που αργότερα παραφράστηκε ως Αποκορώνα. Η αλλαγή της ονομασίας της λίμνης Κορησσία τοποθετείται κατά την περίοδο της Αραβοκρατίας στην Κρήτη, αλλά η προέλευση του ονόματος άλλοτε αποδίδεται σε αραβική λέξη που σημαίνει λίμνη ή λουτήρας και άλλοτε ως παράφραση της ελληνικής λέξης κρουνός.

Lake Kournas is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete. It is mentioned in antiquity by Stephen the Byzantine with the name Korisia and it is said in the area that there was an ancient temple that was attributed to Athena Korisia and seems to have been dedicated to the Horse or to Kore. It is said that these names gave the older place name Ippokorona which was later paraphrased as Apokorona. The change of the name of Lake Korissia is placed during the period of Arab rule in Crete, but the origin of the name is sometimes attributed to an Arabic word meaning lake or bath and sometimes as a paraphrase of the Greek word krounos.
